created on: Nov 28, 2014 | Puyo, Ecuador

Week two at Yana Cocha was a little less overwhelming than the first week since "I knew what I was doing." The tasks are similar each week so I won't bore you with the day to day details like my last post. To start, my stomach felt significantly better but was still not 100%. I decided to start using my water purification drops on the already filtered water just to be …

Here is my first post from Yana Cocoa, which is an animal refuge about 10 minutes from the city of Puyo. The centre has been in operation since 2006 and currently cares for approximately 154 animals. They really completely on the work from volunteers and the volunteer coordinators to care for the animals. There is also a veterinarian on site at all times who looks after sick animals and all …

This is my last week at the MLC and my last week in Peru! I have mixed feelings about leaving because I will miss the jungle but I am also ready for a change of scenery and routine. I am both physically and mentally ready to move on but I also realize what a unique and extraordinary experience this was. Not many people can say that they lived and worked …

Well I have made it to week three of living in the Amazon Rainforest! This week was definitely the highlight of my time here. Our group had a half week of work before heading out on expedition to a local community called Queros! It was so nice to get away from the MLC and have a well deserved rest. When I first signed up for this project I thought the …

Well I got my wish this week! I was out in the forest almost everyday all day and my feet took a beating. Monday was a long day with Colpa early in the morning and then all day soil sampling. We had lots of birds landing on the claylick this morning and when we left we had two chestnut-fronted macaws fly over us super low which was really cool. When …

This week was a combination of city living and jungle adventures! I have to say that Cusco is my favorite city I have been to so far. The downtown area is quite touristy but the city is scattered with markets and cute little restaurants and coffee shops. There are beautiful old churches and museums around the main plaza as well. You can see mostly Spanish architecture around town but there …

created on: Nov 07, 2014 | Manu National Park, Peru

This was my first week getting involved with activities at the MLC. It wasn't a particularly exciting week as I spent most of my time around camp rather than in the forest unfortunately but someone has to do those jobs as well.  On Monday we had emergency first response training all morning where we learned CPR, bandaging, and other first aid related stuff. We had a lot of presentations in the …

My last week was just as amazing as the rest of the trip. On my day off I went on a tour with Matilda to Ricon de Vieja. I was expecting to do some hiking but we ended up doing a lot of activities. We started with ziplining which was beautiful. The cables crossed the river many times and the views were beautiful. The next activity was tubing down the …

Well a lot of amazing things have happened during week three of being in Costa Rica!  On Sunday I went to town with another volunteer who is from Germany. We went to a beach town called Tamarindo which is full of tourists and had pizza, ice cream, and a few well deserved beverages! We also did some shopping and I got a nice tank top, some postcards, and coffee. On Monday night …

So my first week of working with the turtles has been great! I do have to admit that I have not seen many since they are only active at night and I have only done two night patrols. I will start at the beginning on how I got to the beautiful Guanacusta Province of Costa Rica.  I took a bus from San Jose to Matapalo which is on the North Pacific …
