  • Human Trafficking: One Girls Story

Travel Journal from Thailand Chiang Mai, Thailand | Wed Oct 19, 2011

When we first saw Nok, she was sitting alone in front of her house. Her mother had abandoned her family a year ago and her father spent his days drinking at the local bar. As we approached, her quiet and uncaring manner seemed too mature for a girl as young as she was; her eyes were sad and lonely. She was introduced to us by the head of the village …

  • Being Vegetarian in the Philippines

Travel Journal from Philippines Tacloban City, Philippines | Wed Oct 19, 2011

Being a vegetarian in the Philippines can at times be a little challenging.  Vegetarianism is not at all common in the Philippines and when you visit most restaurants there aren’t often too many options available on the menu if you don’t eat meat.  That’s not to say that you can’t eat anything - you just have to know what to ask for!! If your volunteering in Tacloban it may seem like …

  • Best Experience Ever

Travel Journal from Thailand Surin, Thailand | Thu Oct 13, 2011

I arrived in Situk after a six and a half hour bus ride from Bangkok.  Alex Godfrey, the brilliant man who runs the project, met us off the bus.  We went to the local market in Situk and bought 200 kilos of cucumbers and potatoes to feed the elephants.  Then, Alex took us to the site.  We went straight to the enclosure.  The enclosure is a …

  • Victoria falls, a breath taking natural wonder and an adrenaline junkie’s dream

Travel Journal from Zambia Livingstone, Zambia | Fri Sep 09, 2011

From Arusha, Tanzania I travelled by bus through Malawi and into Zambia during my time away from volunteering as a teacher. Here is what I got up to at my final destination, Victoria falls. If you are travelling to Zambia or Zimbabwe I strongly recommend visiting the phenomenal Victoria falls, aka ‘the smoke that thunders’. It is the largest waterfall in the world based on width and height and is a …

  • Songs for the road/plane/boat

Travel Journal from England Manchester, England | Fri Sep 02, 2011

Taking your ipod with you on your travels? I never budget the battery properly and usually have just enough for the way there. Whether you're listening en route to your destination or at home while you pack, some songs just get you in the mood to hit the road. This list is by no means exhaustive, but these are songs that always make me want to travel - and provide …

To all those travelling to the Philippines let me just tell you that as soon as possible change one of your P500 or P1000 notes and get some 20, 50 and 100 Peso notes. Try and do this before you get a taxi for example because many taxi drivers will say they do not have change and you will end up paying far too much for your taxi ride. Also, when travelling by taxi always use a metre taxi and make sure that they switch it on so you don't get ripped off!
