Now my time is over in Sulawesi I'm heading to Borneo to check out some projects there. I've got a day in Jakarta and a day in Penang on the way.

I’m now in Penang, Malaysia.  We aren’t going to have any projects here but I had to stop off here as all the flights from Jakarta to Kota Kinabalu were full.  I left Manado at 7am yesterday.  I arrived in Jakarta at 10am and spent the day and night there then caught a 6am flight to Penang.  I arrived in Penang at 9.25am and I have to wait until 8.15pm for my flight to Kota Kinabalu.

I’ve really enjoyed spending a little time looking around both Jakarta and Penang.  When I arrived in Jakarta yesterday I was pretty tired since I’d been up since 4am.  My hotel wasn’t exactly the Ritz though and I didn’t want to waste my day so I forced myself to head straight out and have a look around the city.

I started my tour by visiting the Monas Monument which is situated pretty near the centre of the city.  I’m not sure if it was just me being dizzy because I was so tired but getting in and out of the museem which is inside the monument is extremely confusing.  If anybody else has ever been I’d love to hear your opinion!

The next stop on my cultural tour was obviously the “Manchester Untied Cafe Bar” – where else would one go when visiting Jakarta’s sights!?! Indonesians are football crazy and the first question they ask when I say I’m from England is: “are you from Manchester?”.  Manchester United seems to be by far the most popular team here.

Once inside the Manchester United Cafe, I guiltily ordered some nachos and some cheesy potato skins.  Indonesian food is so delicious but after living in the Philippines for 10 months in an area where it is not possible to get either of these dishes, I simply couldn’t resist the temptation!

With a satisfied stomach a spot of shopping was in order.  I hadn’t done any research on where to go or what to do in Jakarta so I headed so I wandered round until I discovered a shopping mall called Tharmin City which had a myriad of shops selling batik clothing and Indonesian handicrafts.  Then, after a bit of retail therapy, it was back to my dingy room where I was in bed by 7pm, exhausted after a long day.

Up at 3am the next day ready to catch my 6am flight to Penang.  I don’t feel too bad considering I’m getting up at this ridiculously early hour.  When I arrive in Penang I get myself on a public bus down to the city centre.  I’m surprised at how different it is to other parts of Asia.  I’ve actually been to Penang for the day a couple of years ago but can’t really remember it at all.  It could virtually be any city in Europe.  The busses are the same as English busses and the roads are very orderly as well; not the usual hustle and bustle of Asian roads with tooting horns and everyone making a mad dash to get to where they want to be with seemingly no awareness of any other traffic on the road!  There’s even a free hop-on hop-off bus which I take to see a few of the sights of the city.  There’s some lovely buildings which also add to the European feel of the place as well as some great cafes packed with character hidden away on quiet side streets.  I really wish I had more time to explore but before I know it it’s time to head off back to the airport to catch my flight to Kota Kinabalu.

I’m extremely excited to be going to Borneo.  It’s not somewhere I’ve ever really considered before but the more I’ve been reading about it in preparation for my trip, the more excited I’ve been getting.  Just a few more hours to wait J
