I can't wait to really get stuck in as an intern here

I have been in Cape Town for less than 48 hours and I already feel at home. The flat that I am staying in (the Cape Town Loft) is home to about 10 other interns. Most work at Greenpop like I do but the rest work in all sorts of different places, from an LGBT organisation to the fashion industry. We are a very international group and I am currently the only one from the UK. I can already tell we are going to have some great adventures together! The loft itself is really fab. It used to be the Greenpop headquarters and is filled with cool furniture and art, inspirational notes and messages to encourage sustainable living. We are living right in the city centre, just 15 minutes walk from our office. Around the corner there is a trendy coffee shop - I have already fallen in love with the tasty food, unusual coffees, eccentric bouncer (complete with top hat and cane) and steampunk decor.

As for work itself, I can't wait to really get stuck in as an intern here. Greenpop are a relatively new NGO (established in 2010) but have already achieved so much. They have planted over 50,000 trees in South Africa and Zambia, and have run numerous events to bring communities together, promote green living and positively impact upon the local environment. They are currently running a 3 week festival for action in Zambia, with a music festival Earthfest happening this weekend. It is so exciting being here at a time when they have so much going on, though it is a bit strange that a lot of the managers are currently in Zambia and won't be back until next week!So what have I been up to? I spent my first morning here visiting the Greenpop nursery, which had absolutely stunning views over Cape Town. I learnt about all the ways this charity uses the nursery, and helped with a little weeding, sign painting, watering and wall building. I am also helping out on a tree planting day tomorrow. Although I am dreading the 5:30am start, I can't wait to see more of what Greenpop does, and meet some of the people who will be volunteering with us. It is great that I have been able to find an office internship that also allows me to get out into nature and see the work that they do (literally) on the ground.

I have only just got here so I hardly have any interesting insights into the South African culture, or great anecdotes about nights out in Cape Town, but I can tell that it won't be long before I have lots to say about my life here!
